Cross Curricular English and Economics Unit on Homelessness

The 9th grade English and Economics students are engaging in a cross curricular unit on homelessness.  As part of this unit, Cheryl Carter, from Drake House, a nonprofit which facilitates homeless single mothers moving from homelessness to self-sufficiency through a three-stage program talked with Dr. Gingrich’s 9th grade English class. The students asked thoughtful questions, learned about the wide range of reasons for homelessness beyond the stereotypes, went through an economics lesson on how the high cost of living in the north Fulton area can lead to homelessness, and connected to health care sciences by learning about brain science and the connection between trauma, homelessness and executive brain function.  Ms. Carter’s presentation developed student empathy for the precariousness of many women and children within our community.
