Innovation Academy Teaches Crabapple Crossing Students STEM

by Gabrielle Siegel

On November 18th, third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade Crabapple Crossing students discovered science isn’t always boring. Ten students from Innovation Academy’s Technology Student Association (TSA) came to teach the fun of STEM. TSA’s Outreach and Service Committee goes to neighboring schools to bring different activities teaching the kids STEM, and Crabapple Crossing was their last event of the semester. From elephant toothpaste to bottle rockets, they learned a bit of physics, a bit of chemistry, and even some math.

From the words of one fourth grade student when he was told they were leaving, “Why do we have to go to Specials?” Specials is the elementary school elective-esque period but, for these excited kids, leaving the glorious rockets was too hard. The transition between each activity found itself delayed by questions, questions, and more questions from students who finally learned math and science can bring exciting results. At the end, even some of the teachers got to launch some rockets. Despite one hilarious close call, the only casualties were bottles and countless students’ voices from all the excited screaming.

Innovation Academy and their TSA hope to continue spreading the value of asking questions, experimenting, and searching for answers.
