IA Student panel speaker at United Nations talk

Arda Seckiner is a sophomore who will be one of nine panel speakers at the United Nations Associations talk this month. The theme of the conference is “Empowering Youth to Nourish Peace” and will be held virtually on November 11 from 5:15pm-7:30pm. Registration to this event is free.

Arda became involved with the United Nations Associations (UNA) in January of 2021. He liked the volunteer opportunities they offered, which center around the ideals of educating, inspiring, and mobilizing Americans to support the mission of the United Nations. He decided to apply and join their program. Arda aspires to become a dentist, so he focused his entire application on the importance of good oral hygiene. UNA had opportunities for Arda to explore his passion for dentistry and volunteering by helping children who are less fortunate develop healthy habits regarding oral hygiene.
UNA has given Arda unique opportunities to educate and inspire others. Last year, he helped promote Twin Science Kits to students at Chalker Elementary School in Kennesaw. He also held an information booth at the Atlanta Green Market Festival at Ponce City Market to promote these kits, and he attended a STEM Fair sponsored by Microsoft and Home Depot at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. His next opportunity is to be a speaker on the panel of the 11/11 talk about “Empowering Youth to Nourish Peace”. When you ask Arda what UNA has taught him, he says: “It has taught me to broaden my lens and how to be an open-minded person. With these skills, I can effectively communicate to adults and the youth about various topics confidently and correctly. Also, I received advice from the older generation professionals about how to help people. Life is not just in our community, state or country, life is all around Earth.”

Arda may be talkative, but he is also a great listener. He also is good at solving all kinds of problems, which has made him a perfect candidate for the Health Sciences pathway at IA. With the knowledge that he has learned in Health Sciences, he has been able to connect with people on a finer lens and truly understand the medical terms they use. Through his pathway, Arda has become more empathetic because he learned about diseases on a more specific scale, which means he understands the detriments of the disease.
